You sound like a seasoned sailor to me! Not that I am much of a sailor, but I live with one, and occassionally tag along. And I'm always learning new words. Last weekend it was cunningham.. which is a type of downhaul...which is a kind of line... or ROPE in regular language. And also I was corrected that this particular rope, while considered a line, cannot be called a sheet. It's amazing how the specialized vocabulary can get several levels deep--I feel like I need a flowchart.

Two quick updates:

1. Sailing class last night was spinnaker work again, but this time on a J-105 with an asymmetric spinnaker. This is a much simpler set-up - no pole connected to the mast to manage - and felt like "Easy Mode" on the boat last night. The boat I've been practicing on is a C&C 115, and it's like a junior high athlete (me) being allowed to practice with the high school kids (the C&C 115 crew). :-)

2. My offer for $150 for the roomette upgrade was accepted by Amtrak. Note that it would have cost at least $100 more if I purchased that outright, so this new bid/upgrade feature will be a new element in my train trekking strategy book.
